Bearing the brunt of volatile gas prices and high electricity costs coupled with increases in the cost of living, consumers are hoping that the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis turns toward renewable alternatives, such as geothermal and wind energy, soon. In February 2009, the Federal Government signed a letter of intent to purchase energy from Nevis upon completion of its ambitious geothermal project in 2010.

Bernard Welsh, PAM candidate for Constituency Number Three, would take up Public Works and Utilities as his portfolio if his party were to form the new government. He stated that “transparency” in the those ministries, under his guidance, would lead to more efficient and cheaper utility services for the nation, as well as infrastructure projects that “give the people more value for their money”.
